The Royal Treatment: Fares Moses’ Tulip Atelier Brings Dutch Elegance to the Middle East
February 21, 2025In the competitive world of high fashion, where originality often takes a backseat to commercial viability, one of the most influential dutch fashion designer Fares Moses stands apart with his unique vision that merges Middle Eastern opulence with Western refinement. His creations—described as “draagbare kunstwerken” or wearable art pieces in Dutch—have been making waves in the Netherlands and beyond, offering a fresh perspective in an industry often dominated by minimalism.
Crafting Identity Through Fashion
“Creatief, empowerend, samenwerkend,” Moses responds when asked to describe himself in three words—creative, empowering, collaborative. These aren’t just buzzwords for the designer; they form the foundation of his approach to fashion and business.
“I’m always searching for art in my work,” Moses explains. “I try to be creative with everything I do: naturally with the pieces I create, but also with how I run my business and how I view the world.”
This creativity manifests in garments that are boldly feminine and luxurious—striking gowns, suits, and tops that aren’t designed for everyday wear but rather for life’s standout moments. His collections feature rich colors and exceptional fabrics, ensuring both his creations and the women wearing them command attention. Even his more subdued pieces maintain a hyper-feminine aesthetic, characterized by hourglass silhouettes and distinctive elements like oversized bows, lace, feathers, and waist accentuations.
The Client Collaboration
What sets Moses apart from many designers is his collaborative approach. Rather than creating collections based on abstract inspiration or market trends, he works directly with clients to develop custom-made pieces that tell their personal stories.
“Together, we search for her narrative and try to capture that story and her ambitions in one outfit,” he says. “Or actually, I’d prefer to say: in a wearable piece of art.”
This intimate process allows Moses to create garments that do more than just clothe the body—they transform the wearer’s experience and boost confidence. “It’s very important to me that she feels more self-assured through my work, and that wearing my designs enhances her experience,” he emphasizes.
A Bridge Between Cultures
Moses draws significant inspiration from his Middle Eastern roots, which is evident in his choice of fabrics, colors, and silhouettes. “In the Middle East, everything can be a bit more luxurious and extravagant,” he notes, “and I really enjoy playing with that because there’s so much freedom in it.”
This cultural background creates an interesting tension with the more restrained, structured Dutch fashion sensibility that surrounds him in his adopted home. “In the Netherlands, the style is more subdued and streamlined, which can sometimes be challenging for me,” he admits. “But that challenge inspires me and allows me to look at more extravagant pieces with fresh eyes.”
The designer sees this cultural juxtaposition as an opportunity rather than an obstacle, striving to find a balance between Eastern opulence and Western restraint to create something truly original. “I’m searching for a balance between the two, trying to create work that hasn’t been made before.”
A Journey of Craftsmanship
Moses’s path to becoming a fashion designer has been one of continuous learning and refinement. After completing his education at a sewing and fashion institute in Syria, he specialized in design before moving to Lebanon. In Beirut, he had the invaluable opportunity to work with internationally respected designer Zuhair Murad—an experience he describes as “priceless” in sharpening his skills and introducing him to the magical world of couture.
“By studying and experimenting with different fabrics, styles, and embroidery techniques, I found my niche and my strength: Haute Couture and bridal fashion,” Moses reflects.
Seeking growth and new opportunities, he emigrated to the Netherlands in 2015, where he earned his design diploma from the Vogue Academy in Amsterdam—a crucial step in the further development of his expertise. Today, he proudly calls himself a full-fledged fashion designer, pouring his heart and soul into creating exclusive, luxury garments that appeal to fashion enthusiasts both within and beyond Dutch borders.
Inspiration and Aspiration
When asked about his style icons, Moses points to designers like Zuhair Murad, Ziad Nakad, and Elie Saab. “They inspire me with their eye for detail, their craftsmanship and intricate techniques, and the fabrics they choose to work with,” he explains.
Moses also harbors a dream of designing for Dutch royalty. “I dream of one day creating a very special dress for Queen Máxima,” he reveals. “She’s such an incredibly strong, inspiring, and beautiful woman, and I think for any designer it would be a magnificent task to create something that reflects and enhances her strength and elegance.”
Looking Forward: Vision for 2025
As for what’s next, Moses is in the midst of a small rebrand, clarifying his logo, vision, mission, and core values to build a stronger foundation for the future. “It also means that in a few months, I’ll be launching a new website,” he shares. “I hope this will help me attract new clients in Europe and the Middle East, as I’d like to collaborate with many more different women to create wearable art.”
His goals for the coming year include finding partners to help him grow—such as PR agencies in the Middle East—and securing a larger space in Amsterdam to serve as both atelier and showroom where he can properly welcome guests and clients.
